There are many deaths among the Indian children at Standing Rock, from measles and kindred complaints. Once Indian mother, who had been east to school and was supposed to be quite intelligent, stripped her child naked and gave it a bath in the Cannon Ball to cool of the high fever incidental to measles; the child was in the happy hunting grounds the next day.

BOY MAY HAVE DIED OF GROSS NEGLECT

Said To Have Been Driven From Home Some Time Ago

DOCTOR WAS CALLED BY NEIGHBOR WOMAN BUT YOUTH WAS TOO FAR GONE TO BE GIVEN ANY AID.

William Terwillinger, aged 16 years, died at the home of Mrs. Brown of Cromwell Friday morning of pneumonia.

It is said that gross neglect was indirectly the cause of the youth's death.

During the past summer it is stated, young Terwilliger was driven from home by his father, when he went to the Wilton coal mine and worked for several weeks. A short time ago, as work became slack, he laid off and went to the home of a neighbor woman, a Mrs. Brown, to live. He was taken with a severe cold recently and Mrs. Brown is said to have administered to him to the best of her ability, but later pneumonia developed and on Thursday he became very much worse, when the doctor was sent for. However, the boy was so far gone that medical aid was of no avail, and he passed away within a few hours.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon and intermnent was made at Baldwin. It is said that the funeral expenses were born by the county.

DEAD FROM COAL GAS

Mercer County Woman Asphyxiated While Cleaning Stove Pipe.

Garrison Independent: Mrs. Peter Stern of Manhaven is dead supposedly from inhaling gas from a coal stove, and her son, aged 17 years, is very ill from the same effect. Mr. Stern, who runs an elevator at Manhaven, was at Garrison Wednesday for a load of lumber having left home about 8 o'clock that morning, and it was while he was away that the fatal accident occurred.

It is supposed here that after the father had left the two undertook to clean the stove pipes, and while thus engaged were overcome by gas fumes from the stove. Mr. Stern has the sympathy of all in his bereavement.

Ed Holtz, the barber next door, has a pet. A stray cat came into the shop the other day and took up its permanent residence. The new acquisition to the Seibert barber shop pays ye editors sanctum a visit occasionally and climbs up on the desk and says, "yeow," sort 'o hungry like, just about the time we are deeply occupied with the silent messengers of thought(————!) Meaning things said. Friendly old cat at that. They say it is a pet of Eds boyhood days in Iowa, and has followed him here, taking these many years to make the trip.
