Police Tragedy

J. L. McCartney, aged 25 years and married, was killed by the accidental discharge of a 45 calibre rifle on the Berthold reservation where he was holding down a claim. The accident happened Sunday. McCartney and his wife and another couple had gone out last Sunday to shoot coyotes. The gun was placed in the wagon and on their return home McCartney saw some shrubs and he thot {sp} would look well about his home and stopped to dig them up. He placed them in the wagon and they must have forced the trigger back. The bullet passed thru {sp} his body under one arm, coming out under the other. He died in less than two hours.
