Chief of Police Waller of Bismarck received the following mysterious note from a man who lives near the river: "Fifty Miles Below Buford, July 1—I am shot by horse thieves, and am bleeding to death. Shot through the lungs. Sam Peterson." This was written on a ragged piece of brown wrapping paper, and on the opposite side was the instruction: "Send word to Ole Peterson, Stockholm, Sweden."
