Mathias Podbieski was drowned in Forest river near
Minto. He took his employer's children to the river for a swim and to show them how he could swim plunged into the water from the bank. Then his hand appeared above the surface—a slight commotion—and all was still—and he did not rise again. The boys reported the fact and next day the body was found nearly upright in five feet of water where he had plunged in. He had recently arrived having served in the Russian army in China.
